Describe a Person Who You Think Wears Unusual Clothes in English

In today’s lesson, we’re going to learn how to describe a person who you think wears unusual clothes in English.

I will give a full analysis of all the advanced vocabulary, fixed expressions and collocations in a model answer on this topic given by one of my favorite English teachers Keith to beef up your vocabulary bank.

Before we start, I’d like to mention the four steps proposed by Keith to improve your English-speaking fluency. And from my perspective, this method is of great help to me.

#1. Try: take a question and try to answer it.

#2. Discover: watch a native speaker how to answer the question and analyze all the language that can help you build up the language.

#3. Practice: repeating the chunks and answering the same question again.

#4. Build: give different answers to the same question.

Describe a Person Who You Think Wears Unusual Clothes

So, I’m going to tell you about my history teacher at university.

You know, he was, and still is, a bit of an eccentric, especially when it comes to clothes.

You Know (a filler):

eccentric:adj.

when it comes to sth/to doing sth

When it comes to human dignity, we cannot make compromises. – Angela Merkel

I would say his clothes are unconventional, to say the least. Many students actually think he’s just weird. To be honest, he doesn’t seem to care what others think of his taste in clothes.

to say the least: to suggest that a situation is actually much more extreme or serious than you say it is情况比实际上的还要极端或严重

to be honest

if I’m honest/ if I’m perfectly honest

honestly speaking

to be frank

frankly speaking

taste in music 音乐品位

taste in clothes 服装品位

I actually think he sees himself as being quite fashionable.

see oneself/ think of oneself /regard oneself as:视自己为……./认为自己是…….

I see myself as being a good listener.

So, let me try to describe his rather offbeat style to you. For starters, he always wears odd color socks. Now, this must be on purpose because I can’t see how he could wear mismatching socks every day if it were by accident.

= unconventional/unusual

for starters: 首先

for a start

to begin with

first/first off/first of all

You’re wearing odd socks!

on purpose/deliberately 故意地、有意地

by accident/by mistake 无意地

if it were by accident

If A happened, B would happen.

If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.

If she were an animal, she would be a cat.

If I were you, I’d ask Professor Wang for help.

Next, his trousers, they always seem to be too short and that’s how you notice his socks.

And more often than not, he wears braces rather than a belt. Maybe it’s because he’s rather stout and chubby. Unfortunately, it makes him look a bit like a clown.

more often than not/ as often as not/ usually/most times

Finally, he tends to sport flamboyant shirts with complex patterns and bright colors, but for me, you know, his clothes don’t really match.

tend to do sth

My father tends to interfere too much in other people’s business.

I mean the colors don’t go well together if I’m honest. But he seems very comfortable and at ease in what I would call very quirky attire.

go well together/match: ……

attire(不可数名词)/clothes:服装、衣服
